Gulliver's Travels

Hello. My name is Saki Konagaya. I would like to post about the Gulliver's travel. Jonasan Swift wrote this tale, and it was written in 1726. This story is devided in to four parts, including Japan! I think the story that Gulliver went to Lilliput is the most famous. Lilliput is the country where little people live.

Swift wrote It a metaphor. This story is satire the people and society on the times. Such story is really attractive, I think.

He married and had three children. He wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets in his life. I was really surprised at his hard work and thought that I can’t write so many works. I don’t see every these works, but I like the music of the play, “Merchant of Venice”. It is because I have played it by the trumpet. So I’d like to see the movie. For instance, comedies, histories, tragedies and romance. The most favorite plays for me is "Hamlet". I read it when I was 15 years old. This story was miserable and I got a impression that he struggled against his true minds. So I considered well about Hamlet's and his character. I think Shakespeare wrote these excellent plays referring his own experiences and his family's memorials. Actually, He had 3 children, but his son named "Hamnet" died at age of 11. Then, I think he was very influenced by his son's death.

The first is a voyage to Lilliput, the second is a voyage to Brobdingnag,the third is a voyage to Laputa the forth is a voyage to the Houyhnhnms. I have heard the story in my childhood, but I didn't remember it. Reading this book again in this class, there are a lot of new discoveries. I couldn't grasp the true meaning of this story when I was child, but now, I can catch the meaning. Gulliver's Travels satirizes on the times of society. Thank you.

Beowulf

Hello. My name is Takuya Sakata. I would like to post about "Beowulf". "Beowulf" is a epic poem written by unknown author. Setting of the story is Denmark. The main character is hero Beowulf. He is from Geat, now is Sweden. In Demark, King Hrothgar enjoys his success and built mead-hall where warriors enjoy drinking. But these behavior made Grendel anger, who was demon lived in swamp. Grendel killed them and Danes are suffered. Hrothgar asked Beowulf to kill Grendel and killing was ended in success. After that, Grendel’s mother planned revenge for death of her son, Grendel. However, she was killed by Beowulf. As Denmark became happy, Beowulf returned his country. However, after that, his country suffers by war. Beowulf tried to fight for his country, Geat. But when the dragon bite his neck, he died. After death of Beowulf, according to his wish, he was buried in a place overlooking sea with treasure.

Especially, "Romio and Juliet" is one of the most famous and popular play of his works. This is a tragedy in five acts. Hello. My name is Ayaka Shibayama. I would like to post about Gulliver's travels written by Jonathan Swift. This story is very famous and known in the world, but I had ever read it until I took this class.
This story separates 4 chapters. Especially, my favorite is 1 chapter because I can feel strain scene between Gulliver and very small men. At first Gulliver didn't understand their words and they shoot arrows at Gulliver. However they understood little by little each other and Gulliver became hero in the small country.
Gulliver's travels was made into a movie quite recently. It is very popular around the world now.

Hello. My name is Osawa Akie. From now on, I would like to post about Beowulf.

I didn’t know this story until I had learned in this class. When I heard “Beowulf” at first, I thought it was wolf’s story, but it was wrong.

Beowulf is the one of the oldest story in Germanic language. Beowulf is the hero in Denmark. In the first part, he fought against Grendel who was attacking Heorot, and Grendel’s mother. In the second part, he became the king and he exterminated Dragon which is breathing fire. However, after he fought against dragon, he died.

This story has the origin of fantasy story. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, who wrote The Hobbit, or There and Back Again and The Lord of the Rings, investigated Beowulf, and he was effected Beowulf when he wrote those stories.

Hello. My name is Ryosuke Tsutsumi. I would like to post about Shakeapeare. Shakespeare wrote four famous tragedies, Macbeth, King Lear, Hamlet and Othello. I have read Othello in Japanese. It was sad story. Otthello is soldier of Venice. He has a wife. Her name is Desmemona. One day, Othello started doubting his wife's flirtation, but his wife never flirt. DEsdemona was keeping love Othello. In the last scene of this story, Othello killed Desdemona by outburst of fury for her filration. This sad ending caused by Othello's misunderstanding. Afterward, Othello noticed his mistake and repented. Othello decided to commit suicide.

Hello. My name is Ayaka Suzuki. I would like to post about the Gulliver’s Travel written by Jonathan Swift. I have often read it since childhood. This story is divided into four chapters; especially I am interested in Chapter3. Title of Chapter3 is “A Voyage to Laputa”. It is said that Hayao Miyazaki referred to it when he produced “Tenkuunoshiro Laputa”. Laputa is a flying island, and all people living there are scientists. They are always preoccupied mathematics, astronomy and music. Astronomers move the island with magnetic force of a natural magnet. Such mysterious story may attract readers.
