Shakespeare

Hello. My name is Shunsuke Igarasi. I would like to post about the summary of Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet is one of the plays written by Shakespeare. The setting is Italian city, Verona in the 14th century. Romeo is a member of Montagues family and Juliet is a member of Capulets family. Both of families have negative relationships, but one day, Romeo and Juliet get in love. After that, they get married secretly, but their married life doesn’t last for a long time because there was manslaughter connected with both of families. Romeo lost his friend, Mercutio. Then Romeo would revenge and kill Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin. Romeo treads the path of exile, but he and Juliet want to be together, so they make a plan, Juliet’s death. However, they couldn’t manage to communicate each other, so Romeo misunderstands Juliet’s stating of apparent death. Then Romeo kills himself by taking poison. After Juliet woke up from false sleep, she found Romeo’s death. Then she also kills herself by Romeo’s sword.

This story is a kind of tragedy plays, but this also means real love. They really showed their love for each other, not being undaunted by family’s problems. It’s poor, but being together is very happy for them even if they all died. Thank you.

Shakespeare

Hello. My name is Ayano Kakihara. I would like to post about Shakespeare. I did not really understand his compositions and himself. I only know Romeo and Juliet. I thought the tragedy is the most famous of his compositions, but he wrote more kind and great plays and sonnets. His compositions are not only tragedy but also history, comedies, romance, and problems. They are more than 150 sonnets 38 plays.
I was very surprised at himself. I did not know he had a wife who is very older than him.
Talking this Survey of British Literature class, I could get a chance that I know about a lot of old British literature and writers. It is very fun. Thank you.

So I can learn a lot of things about him and I was interested in him.Shakespeare was born in April 23th 1564 in Stratford-upon-Wvon,Warwickshire,England,and he died April 23th 1616. So April 23th is World literary day. I think that this day is wonderful day! Shakespeare is British, but he did not write play about history in England.Hamlet is died at agelll. Four plays is Tragedy,R&J,Julius Caesar and Great comedies and histories. "DAIKONNYAKUSYA"is Japanese, and it is called DAIKONNYAKUSYA Ham. It means anyone can play well. Romeo and Juliet

Hello. My name is Eri Matsui. I would like to post about the Shakespeare movie. I like Shakespeare’s work. I like “Romeo and Juliet” the best. I think this story is the most famous love story in his work. “Romeo and Juliet” appears comedy, but it is also tragedy. Romeo and Juliet loved each other. Juliet pretended to die to be with Romeo. However, Romeo thought Juliet died, so Romeo committed suicide. Afterwards, Juliet committed suicide. They died because they loved each other. It is wonderful. “Romeo and Juliet” played by other people. Modern version of the “Romeo and Juliet” is also interesting. I will watch various versions of “Romeo and Juliet”. Here is a “Romeo and Juliet” photo. Thank you.

Merchant of Venice

Hello. My name is Miki Hashimoto. I would like to post about the Merchant of Venice movie. I had already known “Shakespeare”, but I didn’t really know the story until I saw play about Merchant of Venice. It is very interesting story. I think Portia is very smart. She says to Shylock, "You can cut a pound of Antonio's flesh, but you mustn't bleed of it." She saves his life. Finally, he and she get marry. The story keeps me in suspense, but the story has a happy ending. I think I want to read the book. Here is a clip of the movie. Thank you.

Shakespeare wrote 38 plays and 154 sonnets. He is known as the best writer of English literature. Shakespeare has 3 genres, comedy, history and tragedy. I have known that “Romeo and Juliet” is a tragic story, but the best of 4 tragedy works are Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello and King Lear. I didn't know that, but I am sure that many people in all over the world have been moved by Romeo and Juliet story. My posted video includes a famous scene at the balcony. Last year, I saw this scene in the English and American literature history and was impressed by it. This is great, so please check it!

Gulliver's Travels

Hello. My name is Yuka Iwanaga. I would like to talk about Gulliver’s Travels. Before I took a British Literature class, I have no knowledge about Gulliver’s Travels except the name. However the more I read the story, the more I enjoyed reading. The most interesting tale for me was Gulliver in the Country of the Houyhnhnms. Yahoo appeared in the story. When we see the movie or pictures, we think that they are very dirty and barbarous ape. Some people say that it show inferior man. Yahoo is eager to fight with themselves and get futile brightening stone. I think that Jonathan Swift make an ironical remark about present-day people because they still continue to war for money. Thank you.

After I took English literature class I interested in Shakespeare. He is great dramatist, actor and poet. So he made many various drams. 『Hamlet』『Macbeth』『Othello』and『King Lear』 of Shakespeare’s famous works are called four major tragedy. These stories have a sad ending that main characters die. These stories are very sad but he made many comedy for example 『As You Like It』『The Merchant of Venice』. I think he had great talent for making story.
In Japan Shakespeare’s works were translated by Syouyou Tubouti. He was very famous novelist in Japan. I did not know that he translated Shakespeare’s works. I want to go to see Shakespeare's play someday.Thank you.

Gulliver's Travels

Hello. My name is Chihiro Tajima. I would like to post about the Gulliver's Travels. I have known the name of Gulliver, but I did not know the story. This is the first time I read Gulliver's Travels. Gulliver got lost in the sea, and reached the country. I could not believe that man in the country were very small. In addition, all of things in the country were small. People in the country were terrified because a big man appeared suddenly. Gulliver was endangered in the sea, but he went to sea, and traveled again. I wondered why Gulliver did risky thing, but I was really enjoyed reading this story. Here are some pictures from the movie Gulliver's Travels. Thank you.

Hamlet

Hello. My name is Sakata Shingo. I would like to post about my impression of Hamlet.
Hamlet is the most popular tragedy in Shakespeare's plays. I thought this British literature course was good opportunity for reading any classical literature, so I chose Hamlet and read it.
It is my first time to read a play. Therefore, I felt strangely at first because it was different from novels. I had to get used to its difference.
I thought Hamlet is genuine tragic play before reading it. However, I feel it's not so genuine after reading it.
Surely, Hamlet dies in tragic destiny. But, in that destiny he seems not to notice he is in treble destiny. No, I felt he perhaps enjoys his destiny. Sometimes he is depressed and sad because of death of his father or Ophelia. However, he usually use irony, say joke, and dose theatrical behavior by preference. In addition, he can be cruel like as he kill Polonius. He is not the person who just writhe with his conduction. So, sometimes I feel it comical due to behavior of Hamlet. That is the reason I feel it's not so genuine.
The drawing is Ophelia by John Everett Millais. So beautiful.

Beowulf was written around AD 680 and AD 800, and this story is an oral literature. Beowulf fought not a human beings; a monster, a witch, and a dragon. He was brave, strong, and kind man. However, he was died in the end of this story. I don't know reason why he died, but I think he was eternally hero for British people. Movie can understand about the contents of the story. I want to read a book of Beowulf and other literature.

About Gulliver's Travels

Hello. My name is Shizuka Mori. I would like to post about the Gulliver’s Travels. I didn't know the story of Gulliver except the part of “A Journey to Lilliput” until I read it in this class. Every place he went to was a unique country. It is very interesting that there were not only differences between Gulliver and the peoples of unique countries, but also they had similarity. For example, Lilliput was in difficulty with another country like today's our world. In Brobdingnag, the play of young girl was not so different from the one of English girl of the same age. Gulliver's Travels teaches us we should not judge a thing by its surface or our stereotype. Gulliver's Travels is very instructive story while it is an exciting adventure story. Thank you.

Gulliver's Travels

Hello. My name is Sachiko Ishizuka. I would like to post about learning from Gulliver's Travels story. I read Gulliver's Travels for the first time and the story fascinated me. In addition, I could learn from Gulliver's Travels and think about many things. In the story, Gulliver travels to different places and communicates with different people. He experiences to be alone among different people; for example, he stays alone in Lilliput which there are smaller people than him. People in each country see him from their own point of view and they regard him as stranger. I thought people feel different culture from themselves strange for the first time. People believe their culture is common. However, in fact, their culture is not common. Then people understand each other by talking about themselves. I enjoyed reading Gulliver's Travels. Here is a Gulliver's Travels video clip in Lilliput. Thank you.

Hello. My name is Yoshino Suzuki. I would like to post about the Gulliver's Travels. I have known this story's name "Gulliver's Travels" since I was an elementary school student, because it is a very famous story in the world. Especially, the scene that Gulliver is tied with thousand of strings by many little people is known by a lot of people in Japan. However, I had never read it before. Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa and the country of the Houyhnhnms. I want to read the part of a voyage to Laputa, if I have a good opportunity to read it. Finally, I have a question about Gulliver. Hello. My name is Marina Ishigaki. I would like to post about Gulliver's Travels. I read one of them, A Journey to Lilliput when I was an elementary school student. However, I did not know other parts, so I read them in this class for the first time. Each part was very interesting, and it was not difficult to read. So I really enjoyed it, at the same time I was very surprised. The reason was that I had known its outline, but I did not know its background. This story expressed the author’s criticism of Britain of those days. I want to study it more minutely. I found a picture about A Journey to Lilliput. Thank you.

So, I read about a voyage to Brobdingnag, Laputa and the country of the Houyhnhnms for the first time. These are very interesting for me. And I realized that this story has political meanings, for example, Lilliput's society and politics express British in 18 century. I think that not only children but also adults can enjoy reading Gulliver's Travels. I found the picture about a voyage to Lilliput. Thank you.

Wife of Bath from Canterbury Tales

Hello. My name is Ayaka Kato. I would like to post about the Canterbury Tales.
In the lecture, I came to interested in one of the famous story in the Canterbury Tales. That is the wife of bath's tales.

The King Arthur commanded the young knight to find the answer of "What do the women most hope to do?" and he made a journey to do it. In his journey, he met the ugly old woman and she told him the answer. After he came back to the court, he told the answer,"Women hope to use their husband at will." Women in the court agreed strongly to his answer.

I couldn't tell all of the story but the tale continues. There is more interesting story in her tale. If you got interest in this tale, please check it. It is worthy of reading.

Sahkespear

Hello. My name is Natsumi Ito. I would like to post about Shakespeare. After Shakespeare's class, i remembered a movie,"Romeo + Juliet" in 1996. This movie got attention because Leonardo DiCaprio was stared in. The story of "Romeo + Juliet" is not same with original. It takes place in modern world and guns are used instead of swords. "Romeo + Juliet" follow the original in main story but it is really modern version story.I researched about Romeo and Juliet movie. There are 7 Romeo and Juliet movies and the first one was made in 1900.Next one was 1908,1936,1956,1968,1990 and 1996. Each movies are different in detail from other movies and the original.I think the 1968 one is most famous. It won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design. It was also nominated for Best Director and Best Picture.I have not watched it yet, so I want to watch!!Romeo and Juliet was written over 400 years ago. However, people love it and make movies. I really think Shakespeare is great writer. Thanks.

Gulliver's Travels

Hello. My name is Chihiro Sone. I'd like to post about Gulliver's travels and my experience. When I finished this story, I felt it very interesting. This story is easy for me to read. Also, I realized Gulliver's experience is similar to mine. When I was a high school student, I went to Australia. I found a lot of difference there. For examples, some rules, customs, behavior to other person, and many things. So I had a culture shock. In this story, Gulliver suffered to difference of culture, and disputed with other people. Especially, I was impressed the scene of Gulliver disputed with Brobdingnag's king about war. So I learned this story, it is difficult to accept a different opinion. Therefore, it is strange things for some person, but it is usual for other person. So I think we had to understand different cultures in other countries. Because there are as many countries as culture. Also I want to understand different cultures. Thank you.

Guliver`s Travels

Hello. My name is Mayu Kawabata. I would like to post about the Gulliver`s Travels. I read the Gulliver`s Travels for the first time, and its story is different I imaged. I had though the Gulliver`s Travels is a fairy tale for children, but it was wrong. This story is not just a travel journal, and it contains many messages. In Brobdingnag, Gulliver spoke to the Brobdingnag`s king about England`s law and war, and the king was terribly shocked to hear the Gulliver`s story. The king said “Your (Gulliver`s) rulers, your men in Parliament and your clever men are not working for the people of your country, and a good farmer, with his fruit or vegetables, helps his people better than them.” I think this is Swift`s idea and he criticizes the England`s law and war and it is one of the messages in this story. I want to read this story again and again to understand the message in this story.
