Wife of Bath from Canterbury Tales

Hello. My name is Ayaka Kato. I would like to post about the Canterbury Tales.
In the lecture, I came to interested in one of the famous story in the Canterbury Tales. That is the wife of bath's tales.

The King Arthur commanded the young knight to find the answer of "What do the women most hope to do?" and he made a journey to do it. In his journey, he met the ugly old woman and she told him the answer. After he came back to the court, he told the answer,"Women hope to use their husband at will." Women in the court agreed strongly to his answer.

I couldn't tell all of the story but the tale continues. There is more interesting story in her tale. If you got interest in this tale, please check it. It is worthy of reading.

Sahkespear

Hello. My name is Natsumi Ito. I would like to post about Shakespeare. After Shakespeare's class, i remembered a movie,"Romeo + Juliet" in 1996. This movie got attention because Leonardo DiCaprio was stared in. The story of "Romeo + Juliet" is not same with original. It takes place in modern world and guns are used instead of swords. "Romeo + Juliet" follow the original in main story but it is really modern version story.I researched about Romeo and Juliet movie. There are 7 Romeo and Juliet movies and the first one was made in 1900.Next one was 1908,1936,1956,1968,1990 and 1996. Each movies are different in detail from other movies and the original.I think the 1968 one is most famous. It won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design. It was also nominated for Best Director and Best Picture.I have not watched it yet, so I want to watch!!Romeo and Juliet was written over 400 years ago. However, people love it and make movies. I really think Shakespeare is great writer. Thanks.

Gulliver's Travels

Hello. My name is Chihiro Sone. I'd like to post about Gulliver's travels and my experience. When I finished this story, I felt it very interesting. This story is easy for me to read. Also, I realized Gulliver's experience is similar to mine. When I was a high school student, I went to Australia. I found a lot of difference there. For examples, some rules, customs, behavior to other person, and many things. So I had a culture shock. In this story, Gulliver suffered to difference of culture, and disputed with other people. Especially, I was impressed the scene of Gulliver disputed with Brobdingnag's king about war. So I learned this story, it is difficult to accept a different opinion. Therefore, it is strange things for some person, but it is usual for other person. So I think we had to understand different cultures in other countries. Because there are as many countries as culture. Also I want to understand different cultures. Thank you.

Guliver`s Travels

Hello. My name is Mayu Kawabata. I would like to post about the Gulliver`s Travels. I read the Gulliver`s Travels for the first time, and its story is different I imaged. I had though the Gulliver`s Travels is a fairy tale for children, but it was wrong. This story is not just a travel journal, and it contains many messages. In Brobdingnag, Gulliver spoke to the Brobdingnag`s king about England`s law and war, and the king was terribly shocked to hear the Gulliver`s story. The king said “Your (Gulliver`s) rulers, your men in Parliament and your clever men are not working for the people of your country, and a good farmer, with his fruit or vegetables, helps his people better than them.” I think this is Swift`s idea and he criticizes the England`s law and war and it is one of the messages in this story. I want to read this story again and again to understand the message in this story.

Gulliver's Travels

Hello, my name is Sayaka Yokoi. I would like to post about Gulliver's Travels. When I went to the elementary school, I read only "A journey to Lilliput" story. I drew a picture of Gulliver in the class. This story is very famous in Japan, too, but many people don't know other voyages. Also, I didn't know "A voyage to Laputa" until I took a lecture. I really like "Tenku no Shiro Laputa", so I want to read it. Gulliver's Travels also has lesson. In the 18 century, England was strong country, and sometimes did war to get new countries. Swift written the differences between religions and ancients vs modern to use irony and parody. We can know the background in those days to read this story.

Gulliver's Travels

Hello. My name is Ayumi Edamura. I would like to write about Gulliver's Travels and my experience while I was in America. Actually it was the first time I read Gulliver's Travels, but it was easy to read and understand. It was also easy to sympathize with the idea of this story. At first when I came to America, I was surprised at everything and could not understand and accept the differences between America and Japan. I had a culture shock. But as time passed, I began to understand the differences. I had to accept everything because everyone and every countries have own cultures and their sense of values. We cannot reject their cultures and sense of values. I learned a lot of things through this experience as Gulliver experienced.

Gulliver's Travels

Hello, my name is Kasumi Takahashi. I would like to post about Gulliver's Travels. This is first time to read Gulliver's Travels, and I could enjoy this book very much. When I finished reading all chapters, I realized that the author wanted people to know the world in wars in those days. I didn't know well about the wars among European countries for plantations. Although Gulliver thought that England was the strongest country in the world at first, this was not true, and he could understand that the life in wars is not everything. Let me summarize a little about the Gulliver's first journey to Lilliput. When he was seventeen years old, he left his school and travelled on a ship Antelope to the South Seas. On his way to the East Indies, a terrible weather changed his way to home. Some of the sailors died, and he finally was alone. Fortunately, he was alive, and reached a world in smaller people. They were afraid of him because Gulliver was much larger than the people. Here is a video about Gulliver in Lilliput.

Beowulf movie and text

Hello. My name is Mark Sheehan. I would like to post about the Beowulf movie. I did not really understand the history of Beowulf until we read about it in class. At first I just thought that Beowulf was another action movie like Lord of the Rings, but now I realize that it is more than that. The movie is a modern version of this heroic story. Just like people gathered to hear about the hero in 600 or 700AD, people gather in a movie theater to hear about the great warrior. Same story, just a different way of telling it. Now that I know that a lot of these great stories originally come from great literature, I will read some background information before I watch the movie. Here is the original text of Beowulf and a clip of the movie. Which type of entertainment do you prefer?

Thank you.
